Our Story

Over 50 years. Two generations. The same spot on the high street — named for the man who built it.

A Holmfirth high street shop, passed from mother to son — and now, to us.

Long before it was Andrews of Holmfirth, it was simply the Greengrocer’s on the corner. Andrew's mum Dorothy ran it first — weighing potatoes, arranging the oranges, knowing every customer by name. When she stepped back, Andrew took the keys in 1974 and carried on exactly as she had.

Andrew stood behind that counter for over 50 years. Half a century of early starts, of choosing fruit by hand at the market, of chatting with the same faces week after week. Two generations of the same family, the same shop, the same corner of Holmfirth. That doesn't happen by accident — it happens because you do the work properly, every day, for a very long time.

When Andrew finally retired, the shop passed into new hands. We renamed it Andrews of Holmfirth in his honour - because a place with that much history deserves a name that remembers it. The trading name has changed from Andrews Greengrocers, and we've given the interior a refresh - but nothing that matters has. Same principles. Same neighbours walking through the door.

Our job now is simple: don't be the generation that lets it slip. Keep it fresh, keep it honest, and keep the door open for whoever's walked this high street for years — and for anyone new to the valley who wants to know what a proper greengrocer feels like.

50YEARS & COUNTING
What drives us

What we believe in

Local

We source as close to home as possible. That means local farms, local suppliers, and fresh produce that hasn't travelled further than it needs to. And when the restaurants, pubs, and cafés of Holmfirth come to us for their ingredients, we think that's exactly how it should work.

People

The hands behind the counter

A

Andrew

The name on the door

Fifty years behind the counter. Took over from his mum Dorothy — who ran the shop before him — and carried it for half a century without fuss or fanfare. If you've lived in Holmfirth any length of time, you've bought apples and a lot more from Andrew. The shop carries his name because the shop wouldn't exist without him.

Johnny Hunt

The proud new owner

Johnny took over from Andrew with one promise: don't let it slip. Same suppliers where he can. Same hours. Same open door at 64 Huddersfield Road. He's not trying to reinvent the place — he's trying to be worthy of it. A proper Holmfirth greengrocer, for the next fifty years.
